JSAM II Grants in NY area for Cheshvan ActivismRequest for Proposals The UJA Federation of New York, through its Commission on the Jewish People, is offering grants of US$2,500 - $4,500 for JSAM projects in the New York area. JSAM thanks the UJA Federation of New York for its magnificent support. The Commission on the Jewish People is seeking to fund Jewish social action and community service programs during the month of Cheshvan - Jewish Social Action Month. Grants of $2,500 - $4,500 will be considered. Applications are due September 15, 2006. Gearing up for Jewish Social Action Month 2006Preparations are intensifying for the second annual Jewish Social Action Month [JSAM] with organizers expecting the global initiative to be even more successful than last year’s triumphant launch. Do the Jewish People really need another holiday?A group of young activists is asking that all Jewish calendars mark the Jewish month of Heshvan as "Jewish Social Action Month." In the Jewish tradition, the month of Heshvan is often described as Mar-Heshvan ("bitter Heshvan"), a time of bitterness as it has no holidays. But, Israeli President Katsav said making Jewish Social Action a permanent part of the Jewish calendar should "lead to the removal of the Mar [bitter] preface to the name of the month."
