Request for Proposals
Funding for Jewish Social Action Month, October 23 - November 21

The Commission on the Jewish People is seeking to fund Jewish social action and community service programs during the month of Cheshvan - Jewish Social Action Month. Grants of $2, 500 - $4, 500 will be considered. Applications are due September 15, 2006.

Introduction

The Commission on the Jewish People at UJA Federation of New York (COJP) is committed to fostering a sense of Jewish peoplehood and unity among communities worldwide. Participation in community service and social action initiatives has the potential to enhance individual and collective Jewish identity and an understanding of the Jewish values of tikkun olam and gimilut chessed (repairing the world and acts of loving kindness). Service experiences provide a context for bringing Jews together from all backgrounds, allowing them to learn from each other, and gain a broader understanding of the global Jewish community while doing something beneficial for the community.

COJP is seeking to fund community service or social action programs (one-time, episodic or ongoing) that begin / take place during the month of Cheshvan (Oct. 23-Nov. 21), which in 2005 was declared Jewish Social Action Month. The Commission’s overarching goal for funding these initiatives is to use social action and community service as a means of bridging diversity and uniting Jews around the world as an inspired, caring, global community.

Program goals for Jewish Social Action Month proposals (these items should be addressed in the proposal):

  1. The program provides opportunities to connect participants to the global Jewish community; Participants’ feelings of connectedness to the global Jewish people are enhanced
  2. The program enables Participants to identify and incorporate social action and community service as an expression of Jewish values and collective identity
  3. Participants have a heightened awareness of and connection to the diverse elements of the Jewish community as a result of this service experience

The Commission on the Jewish People seeks to fund initiatives that include the following program components:

  1. Connections to other programs / participants around the world who are celebrating Cheshvan as Jewish Social Action Month
  2. Programs with Jewish service learning components will be strongly considered
  3. Community service programs that will bring together diverse segments of the Jewish population (e.g. intergenerational, religious / secular, new immigrants / natives)

Please submit a 1 -3 page proposal to Judith Veinstein, Planning Director for the Commission on the Jewish People, UJA-Federation of New York, 130 E. 59th Street, NY, NY 1022 or veinsteinj@ujafedny.org by September 15, 2006. Proposals should include a description of the project, identify participating target population(s) and project partners, and provide a budget summary. For questions about the proposal please call Judith Veinstein at 212-836-1284.
