Jewish Social Action Month Starts on October 23rd
JFL Media (Jewish Family
and Life!) Social Action Month was created to foster unity within the global Jewish community and to encourage personal involvement in repairing the world. SAM garnered endorsements from Israeli president Moshe Katsav and American president George W. Bush, among others. Communities and organizations from more than a dozen countries participated in SAM in 2005 including the United Jewish Communities of North America (UJC), and international student and youth groups such as Hillel, RSY, Netzer, Bnei Akiva and Habonim Dror. Events this year include assisting the north of Israel recover from the recent war; partnering with schools in Nepal; an economic justice week in California; an anti-racism event in Britain; working in the deprived townships of South Africa; and helping the elderly and disabled in the Bronx. In Israel, SAM will be launched at the Knesset with an event hosted by MK Rabbi Michael Melchior. The month of Cheshvan is often described as Mar-Cheshvan (bitter Cheshvan), a time of bitterness because it has no holidays. However, Israeli President Katsav said that making SAM a permanent part of the Jewish calendar should "lead to the removal of the Mar [bitter] preface to the name of the month." SAM was created by the partnership of SocialAction.com, a project of JFL Media (Jewish Family and Life!) based in Newton, MA; KolDor, a global network of young Jewish activists; and the Prime Minister’s Office of Israel.
