Alumni Activities Program Officer, Washington, DC

American Jewish World Service and AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps have partnered to create a multi-tiered, comprehensive alumni initiative, with the goal of building and strengthening a community of Jewish activists committed to progressive social change and service. The Washington, DC based Alumni Activities Program Officer will collaborate with the AJWS-AVODAH alumni activities team to develop ongoing training, leadership development, and networking opportunities for AJWS and AVODAH alumni and their peers. American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is an international development organization motivated by Judaism’s imperative to pursue justice. AJWS is dedicated to alleviating poverty, hunger and disease among the people of the developing world regardless of race, religion or nationality. Through grants to grassroots organizations, volunteer service, advocacy and education, AJWS fosters civil society, sustainable development and human rights for all people, while promoting the values and responsibilities of global citizenship within the Jewish community. AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to changing people's lives through the integration of Judaism and social activism. AVODAH participants devote one year to working in local anti-poverty organizations. During that year, they live together, creating a shared experience of Jewish community and service, sustained by ongoing study and reflection.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the AJWS-AVODAH alumni activities team to engage in strategic planning for the alumni community
  • Cultivate relationships with alumni of AJWS and AVODAH service programs and, as appropriate, with alumni/colleagues from other like-minded Jewish service programs
  • Organize regional events and activities that include social, educational, cultural, and advocacy components
  • Facilitate the development of local social and professional networks and mentoring opportunities
  • Work in partnership with the alumni activities team to develop national alumni initiatives and programs
  • Develop, in coordination with the alumni team and other colleagues, targeted social change efforts for alumni
  • Conduct and disseminate periodic evaluation of alumni activities
  • Perform other organizational duties and/or special projects as directed by supervisor

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS plus minimum of three years work experience
  • Significant skills in program development, events planning, and informal education
  • Knowledge about and commitment to the Jewish and social justice communities and the work of integrating social activism and Jewish life
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, effectively and on multiple projects at a time
  • Detail oriented and well-organized, able to manage multiple complex tasks
  • Flexible work style and demonstrated team building skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Creative thinker
  • Ability to build relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Knowledge of evaluation techniques
  • Familiarity with community organizing preferred
  • Experience with service programs and social change efforts preferred
