Support Stem Cell Research

The National Council of Jewish Women (NJCW) is calling for an Action Alert.

The Senate is expected to debate the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, legislation that would increase federal funds for stem cell research. At stake is critical funding for research that scientists believe will yield treatments or cures for any number of conditions, including: Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, spinal cord injuries, strokes, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Funding for potentially life-saving embryonic stem cell research has been largely stymied until now because of debate over which lines of human embryos could be used. This legislation—passed by Congress but vetoed by President Bush last year—has already passed the House with strong bipartisan support again this year.

Despite overwhelming bipartisan support for this research, extremists are working to block this vital research because it involves the destruction of a human embryo. They overlook the countless lives that could be extended, improved, or saved by this research and the fact that the embryos used would otherwise be discarded.

Urge your senators to expand stem cell research by supporting this vital legislation.
