Apples and Honey is an initiative of Brit Olam (World
Alliance) which unites Israeli and Jewish young adults in volunteering for the
welfare and the advancement of communities in need. This program offers a
cultural experience to explore life in unfamiliar communities.
Brief description of the program: Apples and Honey
is an eight month program that provides an opportunity for young adult members
of the world Jewish community, to connect with Judaism and Israel through
volunteering for social change. The participants experience life in the Galilee
Region, participate in a period of meaningful, full-time volunteer service in
Israel, study international development issues, learn to solve conflicts and,
in collaboration with the American Jewish World Service, have the option
to become a volunteer working in developing communities around the world.
Months 1-5: Community volunteer placement in Israel,
diverse study program, touring the Galilee Region and Israel and training for
overseas mission. Participants have the option to select from learning
programs, such as theatre, art, music etc, based on their own desires and
experiences in professional fields. Preparation seminars and workshops include
ways to understand issues of Jewish identity, social justice, humanitarian
values as well as a background in the Hebrew language and Israeli society,
culture and Zionism.
Months 5-8: Participants will travel overseas with
Israeli peers to use their learned skills in significant projects throughout
the developing world.
Cost: The cost of this eight month program is $8,000*
which includes: housing, meals, studies, travel, social activities and cultural
and holiday events in Israel. On assignment in developing communities all
expenses, including flights, are included in the cost. (Flights from
participants' home country to Israel and back are not included.)
*This amount is subsidized by Brit Olam.
Scholarships are available from Masa, and American community
Jewish federations.
Participants: English speaking young adults,
including couples, (without children) of all backgrounds ages 20 - 30 are
welcome to apply. No organizational affiliation is required.

contribute to the growth and strength of the Jewish community through
active volunteerism and education.
- To
encourage the value of volunteerism and to support volunteerism in
developing communities.
- To
establish an international Israeli - Jewish leadership forum.
- To
cultivate an improved social and political image of Israel in the world
- To
develop cultural awareness of the needs of others through Jewish studies.
- To
gain tools and skills to apply to their own communities as active leaders.
